It is a tough decision when deciding where you will add a conservatory to your house. What you plan to use the conservatory and the conservatory furniture in it for will often dictate where the conservatory will end up being built on your property. If you want to use it as a dining room or kitchen extension it obviously needs to be near the current kitchen, if you are using it as a snug or office it doesn't matter too much, if you want to use it as a sun room then you want the conservatory to be south facing.
This guide will cover the relevant points for adding a conservatory to the rear of your property, the front of the property and finally the side of the property.
Front Of Property - Building a conservatory on the front of the property is the least common option. Lets look at some of the reaasons why. Firstly the conservatory is largely a glazed construction which will therefore make the inside of your house visible to everyone walking or driving past your property. An alternative would be to have an orangery built instead of a conservatory as these can be built with solid full height or low walls which would block out come of the passers by. As well as not being ideal for the owner, the chances are that you would need to apply for planning permission, which would likely be declined unless you have a very large front garden.
Side Of Property - Planning permission is more likely to be granted and privacy isnt as much of an issue, but it still features some of the same problems as the front of the property. You will of course lose valuable space off the side of your house and possibly access to your rear garden without having to go through the house.
Rear Of Property - Most of the time this will be the best option unless you have a large house on a lot of land. You dont need to worry about people walking past your house with the conservatory at the rear as it will be enclosed in your garden, and you are a lot more likely to have the permission approved in the first place. Of course, having the conservatory at the rear is ok if the room that you want the conservatory off is at the rear of the property, or the rear faces the direction you want it to!
If you are unsure about the suitability of having a conservatory on your property, the easiest thing is to ask a designer from a conservatories company to come and look at your house as they will be able to tell you your best options and also advise on potential problems for each option. ref:vgh270311
