Building A Sturdy Garden Shed Door

A garden shed door is something many builders will not plan for, most of the time people would just purchase a pre fabricated door, cut the door opening to size, install it, and not give this much thought. The door on the shed is the one part that will get allot of abuse, because of this, maintenance or repair to the door will need to be done. And with garden sheds, the door can vary a whole lot in terms of size and the way it opens. Depending on what you plan to keep inside your shed, you may either need a small sized door or one where a small garden tractor can pass through.

Most garden sheds though are used for keeping large tools like a wheel barrow or a lawn mower. Sooner or later you will need to do repairs to the door because of all the banging that was caused by these garden tools. So it is advisable to have a sizable shed door where you can easily bring in or take out your equipment. Building a heavy duty ledged door will be an ideal choice for this project.

The first thing that you need to do is to ensure that you have all the tools along with garden shed plans. A measuring tape will be very important for this task. Measure carefully to insure you get a snug fit on the door and door opening. Take into account the small space that your hinges will occupy. You will also want to to make sure everything is squared and leveled. If you fail to level and square the door, there will be gaps, and the door will not open and close correctly. Not building the door correctly can cause damage to the door frame as well. Having shed plans to follow along is very important.

The door can be built using rough cut timber or finished wood. Just be certain the lumber you buy is dry and not green, if the lumber has not been dry, it can loose moister and warp.

After doing your measurements, you can now use your saw to cut your boards. Once you cut the material you can double check your measurements for accuracy. Measure and cut the parts for the door brace as well. Typically a door brace would need three pieces of lumber, one goes across the top side of the door, one on the bottom side and one longer piece to go across diagonally the length of the door making a Z-shape. Secure the brace with construction adhesive, and screws or nails.

Position the door hinges to the door and door jamb. With a screwdriver or drill install the door hinges and this project is now finished. If you want to put a handle or a gate latch, you can do for better access and secure your belongings.
