With an herb garden, not only will you provide your kitchen with fresh herbs, you also get to experience the joy of growing your own herbs and indulging in a little gardening. Relatively easy to grow are herbs and they can grow in pots or in a bed in the garden.
When it comes to choosing the herbs you will plant, first look in your kitchen. Growing herbs you can use in your cooking is the most satisfying type of gardening, so check what you have in the spice rack. You'll save money buying them from the store and you will also have fresh herbs that are more flavorful. Some of the more popular herbs are parsley, chives, dill, rosemary, sage and mint.
If you are planting in the garden, make sure that the area you choose has good drainage. If the bed seems to get waterlogged, you may have to dig quite deep about a foot or two down put in a layer of rocks and then plant in the soil above them.
It's not necessary to buy the more expensive plants if you don't want to since herbs can be easily grown from seeds. Do some research on how quickly each herb grows, what height it will reach, and how much space each plant will need. More aggressive plants like mint might be better contained in a pot so they don't take over the entire bed. Pleasant indoors in a pot are the scented plants and they perfume the air and provide you with fresh herbs as well.
Causing your plants to weaken is cutting leaves from them too early which is why you need to wait until they are well established before harvesting from them. You can wait until the plant can provide you with bigger harvest and dry the herbs for future use or you can trim a little to use fresh in your cooking each day. To dry herbs, spread them our on a cookie sheet and bake for 2 to 4 hours at 170 degrees Fahrenheit. On an airtight plastic or glass container is where you should store the dried herbs. If there are any moisture build up in the first few days, then you have to re-dry them. Moisture will lead to mildew and make the herbs unfit for consumption.
When you have your very own herb garden that will constantly provide you with fresh herbs, all the effort in setting up the bed of your herb garden will be worth it.
