Making Family Time Worthwhile With A Home Garden



Home gardening is a wonderful pastime that the whole family can enjoy. That's right, gardening - it happens to be an increasing popular pastime for young and old alike. Home gardening is practiced in some form in roughly eighty percent of all American households, according to reliable studies. Based on these statistics, gardening is one of the most popular outdoor recreational activities in the nation.

Flowers are usually the starting point if you are planning to start a garden of your own. In addition, most people will pursue planting roses. The novice garden does not realize that roses usually take the most time and effort as compared to other flowers. With such an enormous array of flowers to choose from, it is best for the novice to start of with easy care plants and flowers.

Another great way to start out with gardening would be through vegetable gardens. A vegetable garden can bring a sense of pride and accomplishment when you place those fresh vegetables on your dinner table. You can choose from a very wide variety of vegetable plants, so if you want to start a vegetable garden, choose wisely and make sure it is right for your growing climate. For cool weather, the perfect vegetables to plant include beans, zucchini and cucumbers to name a few.

A lot of gardeners plant fruits in their backyards as well. In a warm climate, you could plant watermelons, and trees such as apricots and peaches. Plant your own strawberries, raspberries and blueberries and have endless amusement in your berry garden. Furthermore they are very easy to maintain and require less space than your average vegetable garden.

And yet another way to set up your home garden would be to plant your own herbs. If you have limited space, you can grow your herbs indoors in a sunny window. The most often used herbs for cooking are basil, thyme, oregano, parsley, and cilantro. They also happen to be very easy to grow.

Perhaps you want to landscape your yard - this is a form of gardening you may want to consider. This is so because this mainly involves choosing different shrubs and grass varieties for your yard. This form of gardening also would cover statues or rocks used for decoration purposes, or even water gardens. Plants are just part of landscaping your yard. But be wary of the maintenance you need for your shrubbery and grass lawn.

As mentioned earlier, gardening can be fun and educational for the whole family. In addition, what a delight to see the flowers bloom and harvest the vegetables. But you also need hard work and patience to be successful in the field of gardening. Plants need to be weeded and watered. Do not get discouraged if the flowers are not as brilliant as expected or the beans did not do so well. In this case, research would be your number one tool to help you learn from your mistakes and give the plants another try in the next season.
